Balanced, End to End

Rogue Audio builds the RP-7v2 by hand. It is the company's reference line preamplifier, and it is fully balanced. Two pairs of XLR inputs and two pairs of XLR outputs mean the signal stays balanced from your source all the way to your power amp.

That matters most when the amps are not next to the rack. A balanced run rejects the hum and hash a long cable picks up along the way. So you can put monoblocks beside the speakers, run twenty feet of cable, and still hear a quiet background.

Sources rarely run out either. Three RCA line pairs join the two XLR pairs, which gives you five line inputs before you ever think about a switch box. Two variable RCA output pairs sit alongside the XLRs, with a fixed pair for a recorder and a processor loop for movies.

Tubes, Then MOSFETs

Four 12AU7/ECC802 tubes run in Rogue's mu-follower circuit, in pure class A. A MOSFET output buffer follows them. The tubes shape the sound and the buffer supplies the drive, so the RP-7v2 stays composed into a demanding amplifier rather than running out of grip.

The headphone jack gets the same treatment. It is a high-power, tube-based amplifier of its own, not a resistor hung off the output. A mono button helps with setup and with older recordings, and the OLED display can be switched off when you want the room dark.

On the bench, frequency response runs 5Hz to 100kHz within 1dB, with THD below 0.1%. Gain is 12dB through RCA and 18dB through XLR, and maximum output reaches 9V RMS, or 18V balanced. Slow-start sequencing and auto-mute protect the system at every power cycle. Thirty pounds of machined aluminum, with a 3-year limited warranty (6 months on tubes).
