The Second-Generation Debut That Earned Five Stars

The Debut 2.0 B6.2 is the larger standmount from ELAC's second Debut generation. A 1-inch cloth dome tweeter in a wide-dispersion waveguide sits above a 6.5-inch woven aramid-fiber woofer, with a front-firing dual-flared port beneath.

Andrew Jones redesigned everything from the original Debut B6: new drivers, a crossover at 2,200 Hz, and a larger, braced MDF cabinet. The tweeter extends to 35 kHz, and the aramid cone was reshaped for stiffness and damping.

A Front Port for Easy Placement

Because the port fires forward, the B6.2 is more tolerant of a shelf or a wall behind it than a rear-ported speaker. That is a practical advantage the newer Debut 3.0, with its rear port, gave up.

The Numbers, and What They Ask of You

ELAC quotes 44 Hz to 35 kHz, 87 dB sensitivity at 2.83 volts and a 6 ohm nominal impedance, with a maximum input of 120 watts. That is an easy load, and any integrated amplifier or receiver will drive a pair.

How Much Room It Takes

Each cabinet is 7.7 inches wide, 14.8 tall and 10.6 deep, and weighs 16.3 pounds. The finish is black ash vinyl over thick, braced MDF, and 5-way metal binding posts are fitted on the back.

What Reviewers Are Saying

What Hi-Fi? gave the Debut 2.0 B6.2 five stars on February 26, 2020: "the Elac B6.2s are mature, transparent performers that confidently outline just what the rest of your system is doing."

They called it "a punchy and rhythmic performance" and closed with: "If you want a faithful representation of what the rest of your system can do, the Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2 speakers will deliver just that."

Who Is This Bookshelf Speaker Best For?

  • You want a five-star speaker at a closeout price — this is the model that won What Hi-Fi? over, and this is the last stock of it
  • Your speakers have to sit near a wall — the front port makes a shelf or a tight spot far more workable than most standmounts
  • You want honesty, not flattery — What Hi-Fi? praised its transparency; it shows what your amplifier and source are doing
  • Your amplifier is an ordinary receiver — 87 dB into 6 ohms is an easy load for any integrated amplifier or receiver
  • You want the newest version — the Debut 3.0 B6.3 replaces this speaker with an aluminum tweeter, a rear port and a choice of finishes

How Do They Connect to Your System?

Speaker cable runs from your amplifier to a single pair of 5-way binding posts on each cabinet, red to red and black to black. These are passive speakers, so there is nothing else to power or configure.

On stands, aim them roughly at the seat. On a shelf, the front port means you only need a little clearance behind the cabinet. Give the drivers a few weeks of playing before judging the bass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the B6.2 sold as a pair?

Yes. The price is for two speakers, with two grilles in the box.

Is this speaker discontinued?

Yes. ELAC has replaced the Debut 2.0 line with Debut 3.0, and this listing is remaining stock. It carries the same warranty and our 60-day guarantee as any new speaker.

How much amplifier do they need?

Sensitivity is 87 dB into 6 ohms and maximum input is 120 watts. Anything from about 30 watts works well, and a small receiver is fine.

Can they go on a bookshelf?

Yes, and better than most. The port fires forward, so only a few inches of clearance behind the cabinet is needed. They are 14.8 inches tall, so measure the shelf.

Do I need a subwoofer?

Not for music. The B6.2 reaches 44 Hz, and What Hi-Fi? noted ample bass without strain. For film, a subwoofer adds the bottom octave.

How is the B6.2 different from the B6.3?

The B6.3 moves to an aluminum dome tweeter, a rear port, a magnetic grille and a walnut option. The B6.2 keeps the cloth dome and the front port, which some listeners prefer.
